Just southwest of Las Cruces, the Town of Mesilla is one of the most historic places in the Southwest. It was settled around 1848 after the Mexican-American War, and in 1854 its plaza hosted the flag-raising that confirmed U.S. control of the land acquired in the Gadsden Purchase. Today the Mesilla Plaza is a National Historic Landmark, anchored by the Basilica of San Albino, whose current adobe church was completed in 1906.
Life Around the Plaza
Mesilla's adobe storefronts hold galleries, boutiques, wineries and restaurants, including La Posta de Mesilla, which has operated since 1939. The plaza hosts markets, holiday celebrations and festivals throughout the year. The old Doña Ana County courthouse, where Billy the Kid was tried in 1881, still stands nearby.
Homes in Mesilla and Mesilla Park
Homes here range from historic adobes and Territorial-style houses near the plaza to ranch homes and small acreage along irrigated farmland and pecan orchards. Mesilla Park, between Mesilla and NMSU, offers established neighborhoods with mature trees and an easy commute to campus. Nearby Tortugas and the Barker Road area add more rural, valley-style properties. Mesilla is about 3 miles from downtown Las Cruces, with NMSU, I-10 and the Avenida de Mesilla corridor minutes away. Students attend Las Cruces Public Schools. The valley setting means irrigation ditches, shade trees and a quieter pace, while groceries and services are close at hand.
