Las Alturas sits on the mesa southeast of NMSU near the NMSU Golf Course, with the Pajaro and Fort Fillmore areas stretching south along the edge of the Mesilla Valley. NMSU, the NMSU Golf Course and the shops on University Avenue are close, and Tortugas Mountain, known locally as "A" Mountain, has popular hiking and biking trails. I-10 makes the drive south to El Paso and Santa Teresa direct.
